Better Bones is a whole-food calcium and mineral supplement for dogs on raw or home-cooked diets — single-ingredient, air-dried beef bone powder from BSE-free, grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle. It's the clean, measurable, safe-to-feed alternative to whole raw bones, designed specifically for owners who make their dog's food from scratch and need a reliable way to balance calcium and phosphorus without guessing.
This isn't a joint or arthritis supplement in the conventional sense — it's a diet-balancing essential for anyone feeding DIY meals. Available in 250g.
For dogs on raw or home-cooked diets only. Not needed — and not recommended — for dogs eating commercial pet foods, which already contain balanced calcium and minerals. Do not add to foods that already include whole bone or calcium supplementation. One jar typically balances around 30 pounds (13.6kg) of home-prepared food for an adult dog.
If you feed your dog fresh food — raw or lightly cooked, meat-based, prepared at home — your dog needs calcium. Muscle meat alone contains very little; bones and bone-based sources contain a lot. Feeding whole raw bones works for some dogs but comes with real problems: variable density (different bones contain different amounts of calcium), choking and splintering risks, dental damage, inconsistent mineral content, and the challenge of measuring what your dog actually consumed.
Better Bones solves those problems. It's powdered bone — pre-portioned, consistent, safe to feed, and easy to measure. You know exactly how much calcium and phosphorus you're delivering with every teaspoon. For puppies, pregnant or lactating females, and seniors on DIY diets — where calcium balance matters most — this kind of precision isn't optional, it's essential.
Why Bone Rather Than Synthetic CalciumMost calcium supplements use synthetic calcium — calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, or isolated calcium from sources like eggshell, seaweed, or coral. These work in a pinch, but they have real limitations. Eggshell, seaweed, and coral provide calcium but contain little or no phosphorus — which means the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in the final meal has to be balanced separately, often guessed at. Synthetic calcium forms lack the amino acids, growth factors, collagen, and trace minerals that naturally accompany calcium in real bone.
Better Bones is whole bone — nothing added, nothing removed. It contains calcium and phosphorus in the natural ratio that mammalian diets evolved around, plus magnesium, iron, zinc, and vitamin D3. It also retains the collagen and growth factors that are lost in high-heat rendering processes used to produce conventional bone meal. Feeding real bone in powder form is the closest equivalent to what dogs' bodies expect — just safer and more measurable than whole bones.
Air-Dried, Not RenderedMost commercial bone meal on the market is rendered — bones (often from sick or euthanised animals, or low-quality sources) are processed under high heat and pressure, then ground into powder. The process destroys the naturally occurring proteins, minerals, and growth factors that make real bone nutritious. It also raises questions about the source animals.
Better Bones is different. The bones come from healthy, BSE-free, grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle — human-grade. They're air-dried at low temperatures, preserving the collagen, amino acids, growth factors, and heat-sensitive nutrients. No acids, no chemicals, no bleaches, no high heat. The result is a clean, traceable, functional powder rather than a rendered by-product.
What's Inside — The Mineral ProfileTypical mineral content (minimums per batch, third-party tested):
| Mineral | Content (min) | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Calcium | 18% | Bone structure, nerve signalling, muscle function, clotting |
| Phosphorus | 8% | Bone structure, cellular energy (ATP), DNA/RNA building |
| Magnesium | 0.3% | Muscle relaxation, heart health, enzyme function |
| Iron | 10 mg/kg | Oxygen transport, energy production |
| Zinc | 75 mg/kg | Immune function, skin health, wound healing |
| Vitamin D3 | 1,560 IU/kg | Regulates calcium and phosphorus absorption |
Plus naturally occurring collagen, amino acids, and growth factors that rendered bone meal loses during processing.
When to Use Better BonesBetter Bones is a core supplement for anyone on a DIY feeding approach: raw feeders (BARF, prey model, or other formats) who want a safe alternative to whole bones; home-cooked feeders (cooked diets destroy bone, so a supplemental source is essential); DIY feeders balancing meals for puppies or pregnant/lactating dogs where calcium requirements are higher; senior dogs on DIY food whose bone density benefits from consistent calcium support. It's not intended for dogs eating commercial dry food, canned food, or complete-and-balanced fresh foods — those are already balanced for minerals, and adding Better Bones would oversupply calcium.
Third-Party Tested — Certificate of Analysis Per BatchEvery batch of Better Bones is third-party tested for heavy metals, pesticides, and mineral content, with a Certificate of Analysis available on request. Source animals are tested BSE-free. Four Leaf Rover holds the NASC Quality Seal and is certified Plastic Negative by rePurpose Global. Manufacturing is GMP-compliant.
IngredientsSource: Four Leaf Rover.
100% Air-Dried Beef Bone Powder, from BSE-free, grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle.
Free from: rendered bone meal, synthetic calcium, fillers, preservatives, bleaches, acids, artificial flavourings, GMO ingredients, gluten, and dairy.
How to UseBetter Bones is measured against the amount of fresh food you're feeding — not against your dog's body weight directly. This is because calcium needs scale with total food volume, not bodyweight.
Adult dogs. Mix 2 teaspoons of Better Bones into every 1 pound (roughly 450g) of home-prepared food. This delivers a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1:1.
Puppies, pregnant, and lactating dogs. Higher calcium needs. The amount depends on the fat content of the meal. Use the guide below.
| Meal fat content | Better Bones per 1 lb (450g) of food | Ca:P ratio |
|---|---|---|
| 10% fat or less | 4 tsp | 1.3 : 1 |
| 11–15% fat | 5 tsp | 1.5 : 1 |
| 15–20% fat | 6 tsp | 1.6 : 1 |
Not recommended for puppy foods with more than 20% fat. A 250g jar typically balances around 30 pounds (13.6kg) of adult dog food — enough for approximately 2 months for a medium-sized dog on a fully DIY diet.
Do not add to commercial dry food, canned food, or complete-and-balanced fresh foods — these already contain balanced calcium, and adding Better Bones will oversupply. Do not add to meals that already contain whole bone or other calcium sources. Intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding of home-prepared meals only. If unsure whether your dog's diet needs calcium supplementation, consult a veterinary nutritionist.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Refrigeration is not required. Keep the lid tightly sealed. Shelf stable.
Frequently Asked QuestionsHow does Better Bones compare to Safe-Sea, Hip & Joint, and Collagen?
All four products sit in the broader "joint and skeletal health" range, but they serve quite different purposes. Better Bones in particular stands apart — it's a diet-balancing supplement rather than a joint supplement in the arthritis sense. Here is how they compare:
| Feature | Safe-Sea | Hip & Joint | Collagen | Better Bones ★ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Format | Liquid oil | Powder | Powder | Powder |
| Primary action area | Joints + skin + immune (omegas) | Cartilage & connective tissue (structural) | Connective tissue (collagen matrix) | Bone mineral balance (calcium) |
| Green-lipped mussel | ✓ (oil — concentrated omegas) | ✓ (powder — GAGs & omegas) | — | — |
| For raw / DIY meal balancing | — | — | — | ✓ |
| Safe for all life stages | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Best for | Daily systemic omega support (joints + skin + coat + immune) | Dogs with structural joint issues (arthritis, stiffness, post-injury) | Connective tissue support (sensitive dogs, single-ingredient purity) | Calcium balancing for raw or home-cooked diets |

Do I need Better Bones if I already feed my dog bones in meals?
Probably not — and it's important not to double up. If you're feeding raw meaty bones that are being fully consumed as part of a balanced raw model (around 10% bone content by total food volume), your dog is already getting calcium from that source. Adding Better Bones on top would oversupply. Use Better Bones if you're feeding boneless meat, cooked meals (which destroy bone's nutritional value), or if you want the measurable consistency of powdered bone versus the variability of whole bones.
Can I use Better Bones with commercial dog food?
No — and this is important. Commercial dry food, wet food, and complete-and-balanced fresh foods already contain calcium and minerals in the correct ratios. Adding Better Bones on top of these will oversupply calcium, which can interfere with other mineral absorption and, over time, affect skeletal development in growing dogs and cause issues in adults. Better Bones is specifically designed for home-prepared meals where calcium has to be added intentionally.
How much does one jar last?
One 250g jar balances approximately 30 pounds (13.6kg) of home-prepared food for an adult dog, which works out to around 2 months for a medium-sized dog on a fully DIY diet. Dogs eating only some home-prepared meals (with commercial food alongside) will go through it more slowly. Puppies and pregnant or lactating dogs use higher amounts per meal and will go through the jar faster.
Why bone rather than eggshell calcium?
Eggshell is a perfectly good calcium source, but it's missing phosphorus almost entirely. Bones evolved to be the main calcium source in mammalian diets, and they contain calcium and phosphorus in roughly the right ratio naturally — with magnesium, vitamin D, and trace minerals alongside. Using bone rather than eggshell means one ingredient balances the mineral profile of the meal, rather than needing to add phosphorus separately or guess at the ratio.
Is it safe for puppies?
Yes — Better Bones is safe and appropriate for puppies on DIY diets, at the puppy-specific feeding rate (4–6 tsp per pound of food depending on fat content). In fact, puppies on home-prepared diets especially need consistent calcium support during the skeletal growth phase, and Better Bones is more reliable than trying to balance meals with whole raw bones. For large and giant breed puppies specifically, getting calcium right during growth is critical for long-term joint health — consult a veterinary nutritionist if you want a customised plan.
Is this the same as the bone meal from the garden centre?
No — and this is an important distinction. Garden-centre bone meal is a fertiliser. It's produced from rendered bones (often unfit for human consumption), processed at high heat, and may contain additives unsuitable for animal consumption. It should never be fed to dogs. Better Bones is made from human-grade, BSE-free, pasture-raised beef bones, air-dried at low temperatures to preserve nutritional content, and tested to food-safety standards. The difference is complete.
Can I combine Better Bones with other Four Leaf Rover supplements?
Yes. Better Bones is a diet-balancing supplement, not a functional one — it doesn't interact with supplements like Hip & Joint, Safe-Sea, Collagen, Protect, or any of the other functional FLR products. It pairs naturally with any of the above in a complete DIY feeding approach.
