Protect Soil Based Probiotics

Protect is a veterinarian-formulated daily probiotic powder for dogs — a next-generation blend of spore-forming soil-based probiotics, probiotic yeast, chlorella, humic and fulvic acids, and organic whole-food prebiotics. Developed to support a healthy gut microbiome while helping dogs clear heavy metals, pesticides, and other environmental toxins from the body.

Soil-based probiotics are fundamentally different from the lactic-acid strains (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium) found in most pet probiotics. They are spore-forming, which means each organism is encased in a hard protective shell that survives stomach acid, heat, and most antibiotics — delivering more viable bacteria to the colon where they colonise. They are also shelf-stable and hypoallergenic, making them well suited to dogs with dairy sensitivities. Available in 92.1g and 184.2g.

Most pet probiotics use lactic-acid strains — Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and related species. These are fragile, damaged by stomach acid, and mostly fail to reach the colon alive. Label claims of "billions of CFU" refer to what's in the jar, not what survives to colonise. Protect uses Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis (2 Billion CFU) — spore-forming species with a hard protective shell that survives stomach acid, heat, and most antibiotics. They only activate once they reach the colon, which is where probiotic colonisation actually needs to happen.

Saccharomyces boulardii (5 Billion CFU) is a probiotic yeast — not a bacteria — which means it is not affected by antibiotics. It works alongside the Bacillus strains to defend against harmful bacteria, support normal digestion, and bind to heavy metals like mercury and aluminium for clearance through the stool. Its antibiotic-resistant property makes Protect one of the few probiotic products suitable to give during a course of antibiotics.

Modern dogs are constantly exposed to pesticides, herbicides, vehicle emissions, and heavy metals through food, water, and the environment. Chlorella pyrenoidosa is a nutrient-dense freshwater algae whose tough cellulose cell wall naturally binds heavy metals and environmental toxins in the gut for elimination through stool, while also supporting the liver's detoxification pathways. Four Leaf Rover recently increased the amount of chlorella in Protect, reinforcing its role as the formula's primary toxin binder.

HumicSure (150mg) — derived from ancient soil and plant matter — is rich in trace minerals that most modern dogs are deficient in. Fulvic acid supports toxin clearance and provides antioxidants, while humic acid helps bind heavy metals and support immune function. Together they restore the mineral-dense connection to healthy soil that indoor living and sanitised environments have largely removed from dogs' lives.

Certified organic wild blueberry powder (1.85g per serving) is a rich source of anthocyanins — antioxidants that help maintain healthy gut flora, support brain function, and reduce oxidative damage. The gut-brain axis means a healthier microbiome contributes to calmer behaviour and better cognitive function, particularly in senior dogs.

Certified organic dandelion root (150mg) and burdock root (150mg) are functional whole-food prebiotics that feed the beneficial bacteria in the probiotic blend, helping them establish and proliferate in the gut. Both herbs also support liver and kidney function — a meaningful complement to the detoxification work done by chlorella.

A 92.1g jar typically lasts around one to several months depending on your dog's size; the 184.2g jar lasts roughly twice as long. For dogs with digestive issues, the dose may be given twice daily. Start with half the recommended dose for 1–2 weeks before building up to the full dose, especially for puppies, small dogs, or dogs new to probiotics.

Store in a cool, dry place. While the soil-based probiotics in Protect are shelf-stable and do not require refrigeration, Saccharomyces boulardii is more fragile and keeps best when refrigerated after opening. If refrigeration isn't possible, store in a cool, dark pantry and use within 30 days of opening. Keep the lid tightly sealed.
