Protect is a veterinarian-formulated daily probiotic powder for dogs — a next-generation blend of spore-forming soil-based probiotics, probiotic yeast, chlorella, humic and fulvic acids, and organic whole-food prebiotics. Developed to support a healthy gut microbiome while helping dogs clear heavy metals, pesticides, and other environmental toxins from the body.
Soil-based probiotics are fundamentally different from the lactic-acid strains (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium) found in most pet probiotics. They are spore-forming, which means each organism is encased in a hard protective shell that survives stomach acid, heat, and most antibiotics — delivering more viable bacteria to the colon where they colonise. They are also shelf-stable and hypoallergenic, making them well suited to dogs with dairy sensitivities. Available in 92.1g and 184.2g.
Usage & safety notes.
Add to food once daily. For puppies and very small dogs, start with half the recommended dose and build up over 1–2 weeks. Refrigeration recommended after opening to preserve the Saccharomyces boulardii — if refrigeration isn't possible, store in a cool, dark place and use within 30 days of opening.
Spore-Forming Probiotics — Engineered to Survive the Stomach
Most pet probiotics use lactic-acid strains — Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and related species. These are fragile, damaged by stomach acid, and mostly fail to reach the colon alive. Label claims of "billions of CFU" refer to what's in the jar, not what survives to colonise. Protect uses Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis (2 Billion CFU) — spore-forming species with a hard protective shell that survives stomach acid, heat, and most antibiotics. They only activate once they reach the colon, which is where probiotic colonisation actually needs to happen.
Saccharomyces Boulardii — Probiotic Yeast, Antibiotic-Resistant
Saccharomyces boulardii (5 Billion CFU) is a probiotic yeast — not a bacteria — which means it is not affected by antibiotics. It works alongside the Bacillus strains to defend against harmful bacteria, support normal digestion, and bind to heavy metals like mercury and aluminium for clearance through the stool. Its antibiotic-resistant property makes Protect one of the few probiotic products suitable to give during a course of antibiotics.
Chlorella — Binding Environmental Toxins
Modern dogs are constantly exposed to pesticides, herbicides, vehicle emissions, and heavy metals through food, water, and the environment. Chlorella pyrenoidosa is a nutrient-dense freshwater algae whose tough cellulose cell wall naturally binds heavy metals and environmental toxins in the gut for elimination through stool, while also supporting the liver's detoxification pathways. Four Leaf Rover recently increased the amount of chlorella in Protect, reinforcing its role as the formula's primary toxin binder.
Humic & Fulvic Acid — Ancient Soil Minerals
HumicSure (150mg) — derived from ancient soil and plant matter — is rich in trace minerals that most modern dogs are deficient in. Fulvic acid supports toxin clearance and provides antioxidants, while humic acid helps bind heavy metals and support immune function. Together they restore the mineral-dense connection to healthy soil that indoor living and sanitised environments have largely removed from dogs' lives.
Organic Wild Blueberry — Antioxidants for Gut and Brain
Certified organic wild blueberry powder (1.85g per serving) is a rich source of anthocyanins — antioxidants that help maintain healthy gut flora, support brain function, and reduce oxidative damage. The gut-brain axis means a healthier microbiome contributes to calmer behaviour and better cognitive function, particularly in senior dogs.
Dandelion & Burdock Root — Whole-Food Prebiotics
Certified organic dandelion root (150mg) and burdock root (150mg) are functional whole-food prebiotics that feed the beneficial bacteria in the probiotic blend, helping them establish and proliferate in the gut. Both herbs also support liver and kidney function — a meaningful complement to the detoxification work done by chlorella.
Third-Party Tested — Certificate of Analysis Per Batch
Every batch of Protect is third-party tested for pesticides, heavy metals, and microbial contaminants, with a Certificate of Analysis available on request. Four Leaf Rover holds the NASC Quality Seal — the benchmark for quality control in the pet supplement industry — and is certified Plastic Negative by rePurpose Global, removing twice the plastic from the environment that it creates. Manufacturing is GMP-compliant. Ingredients are sourced from trusted suppliers across New Zealand, North America, and Europe, with organic chosen wherever possible.

How to Use
Add to food once daily. Measure according to your dog's body weight using the guide below.
| Body weight |
Daily amount |
| Up to 14 kg (30 lbs) |
½ tsp |
| 14–27 kg (31–60 lbs) |
¾ tsp |
| 28–41 kg (61–90 lbs) |
1 tsp |
| 41+ kg (91+ lbs) |
1½ tsp |
A 92.1g jar typically lasts around one to several months depending on your dog's size; the 184.2g jar lasts roughly twice as long. For dogs with digestive issues, the dose may be given twice daily. Start with half the recommended dose for 1–2 weeks before building up to the full dose, especially for puppies, small dogs, or dogs new to probiotics.
Caution.
For healthy adult dogs as a daily supplement. Consult your veterinarian before use if your dog is pregnant, lactating, or on medication. For very young puppies, the priority is fresh, whole-food nutrition — a probiotic like Protect becomes useful once the puppy is weaned. If your dog's condition worsens or does not improve within 4 weeks of consistent use, discontinue and consult your veterinarian.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place. While the soil-based probiotics in Protect are shelf-stable and do not require refrigeration, Saccharomyces boulardii is more fragile and keeps best when refrigerated after opening. If refrigeration isn't possible, store in a cool, dark pantry and use within 30 days of opening. Keep the lid tightly sealed.

My dog is on antibiotics. Can I still give Protect?
Yes — Protect is one of the few probiotic products suitable to give during a course of antibiotics. The spore-forming Bacillus strains are resistant to most antibiotics, and Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast (not a bacteria) and is not affected by antibiotics at all. Continuing Protect during and after antibiotic treatment helps rebalance the gut faster.
Can Protect be used alongside other Four Leaf Rover supplements?
Yes. Protect pairs particularly well with Bovine Colostrum for further immune support, and with Gut Guard in a rotation protocol — Gut Guard for 60 days if your dog has gut-lining issues, then rotate to Protect for everyday maintenance. It can also be given alongside Safe-Sea, Harmony, Hip & Joint, or any other Four Leaf Rover daily supplement.
Why does Protect contain fewer CFUs than lactic-acid probiotics?
Because far more of the bacteria actually survive to colonise the gut. Soil-based probiotics are spore-forming, meaning each organism has a hard protective shell that survives stomach acid and heat. Lactic-acid probiotics often need 30 Billion+ CFU to compensate for the majority being destroyed by stomach acid before reaching the colon. At 2 Billion CFU of Bacillus strains plus 5 Billion CFU of Saccharomyces boulardii, Protect delivers meaningful colonisation efficiently.
My new jar of Protect feels lighter than the previous one — is the amount correct?
Yes — the total amount of product is unchanged, and the feeding directions remain exactly the same. Four Leaf Rover recently updated the Protect formula to remove bentonite clay, because it became increasingly difficult to source clay that consistently met their strict standards for low heavy-metal levels. Chlorella was increased to maintain the same detoxification support. Because bentonite clay is much denser than chlorella, the reformulated product feels lighter in the jar — but the weight on the label reflects the full amount of product inside.
Why are there visible white specks in the powder, and why does the colour vary?
The white specks are the soil-based probiotics and prebiotics — they are meant to be visible. Batch-to-batch colour variation is normal and expected, because the botanical ingredients are natural, earth-derived materials that vary slightly between harvests. This is a sign of minimal processing, not a quality concern.
Is Protect suitable for puppies and small dogs?
Yes, but start with half the recommended dose and build up over 1–2 weeks. For very young puppies, the priority is fresh, whole-food nutrition — a probiotic like Protect becomes useful once the puppy is weaned and especially if transitioning from a processed diet.
Does Protect need to be refrigerated?
The soil-based probiotics are shelf-stable and do not require refrigeration, but Saccharomyces boulardii keeps best when refrigerated after opening. If you can refrigerate, it's the better option. If not, store in a cool, dark pantry and use within 30 days of opening.
