Collagen is Four Leaf Rover's single-ingredient joint and connective tissue supplement for dogs — 100% grass-fed, pasture-raised New Zealand beef collagen, with a naturally occurring minimum of 40% Type II collagen and 20% chondroitin sulfate. No fillers, no flavourings, no binders, no synthetics. Just hydrolysed beef collagen in its most bioavailable form, enhanced with freeze-dried beef liver for palatability.

This is the joint product for owners who prioritise minimal-ingredient clarity: dogs with food sensitivities, dogs who react to multi-ingredient supplements, or households that prefer a clean, single-source formula. Available in 84.9g.

Usage & safety notes.
Add to food once daily. Safe for dogs of all ages, from puppies to seniors. Particularly valuable for growing large-breed puppies (developing connective tissue), active adult dogs (ligament and tendon support), and seniors (cartilage maintenance). Long-term daily use is safe and recommended for sustained support.
Bovine vs Marine Collagen — Why Beef Wins

Collagen supplements broadly come from two sources: marine (fish, fish skin, fish scales) and bovine (beef). Both deliver collagen, but the profiles are different — and for dogs specifically, bovine collagen is the more complete choice.

Marine collagen is primarily Type I collagen — excellent for skin, hair, and some soft tissue, but less relevant for joint cartilage. It also carries higher risk of heavy metal and environmental contaminant exposure, depending on sourcing. Bovine collagen, by contrast, contains both Type I AND Type II collagen — the two types that together form the structural matrix of cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and bone. It also naturally contains chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, and cartilage-derived growth factors that support joint repair and resilience over time. For a dog's joint and connective tissue support, bovine collagen is functionally more complete than marine.

Four Leaf Rover's collagen comes from 100% grass-fed, pasture-raised New Zealand cattle — raised without hormones, without pesticides, and without mRNA vaccines. Traceable, tested for purity, and cleaner than most marine sources by default.

Type I + Type II Collagen — The Full Matrix

Type I collagen is the most abundant collagen in mammals — found in skin, tendons, ligaments, bone, and other connective tissues. It provides structural strength and supports tissue repair across the body.

Type II collagen is the specific type found in cartilage — the cushion that protects joints from wear. It's the collagen that matters most for mobility, cartilage maintenance, and joint comfort in older or active dogs.

Four Leaf Rover's Collagen contains a minimum of 40% Type II collagen — an unusually high concentration for a bovine product — alongside meaningful Type I content. Together, they deliver the full structural matrix that joint and connective tissue support requires, rather than just one dimension of it.

What's Inside

Bovine Cartilage Extract. Rich in naturally occurring Type II collagen and chondroitin sulfate — the two compounds most directly responsible for cartilage structure and function.

Cartilage-Derived Growth Factors (CDGFs). Natural compounds that support tissue repair and help strengthen joint resilience over time. These are present in whole-food collagen sources but stripped out of most processed collagen isolates.

Type II Collagen Peptides. Hydrolysed peptides — broken down to shorter amino acid chains — for maximum absorption and bioavailability. The body doesn't have to work to digest these; they reach cellular targets efficiently.

Low Molecular Weight Chondroitin Sulfate. Chondroitin supports joint lubrication and cushioning. The low-molecular-weight form is specifically designed for optimal absorption — most cheaper chondroitin supplements use larger molecules that absorb poorly.

Freeze-dried beef liver — added for palatability. Most dogs accept Collagen readily mixed into food; the beef liver ensures even picky dogs take to it.

What Collagen Supports

Cartilage maintenance and repair. Type II collagen and chondroitin are the structural backbone of healthy cartilage. Daily supplementation supports the body's ongoing cartilage maintenance, particularly valuable as dogs age or after joint stress.

Tendon and ligament strength. Type I collagen supports the connective tissues that stabilise joints — tendons (muscle to bone) and ligaments (bone to bone). Important for active dogs and post-injury recovery.

Bone matrix support. Collagen makes up roughly a third of the protein in bone. Supplementation contributes to bone density and resilience alongside calcium and mineral support.

Skin and coat condition. Type I collagen is a building block for skin structure. Many owners notice coat quality improvements alongside the joint benefits.

Recovery support. After surgery, injury, or intense activity, collagen peptides support tissue repair and shortened recovery time.

When to Reach for Collagen

Collagen is the joint product to reach for when simplicity matters: dogs with food sensitivities or intolerances where multi-ingredient formulas carry reaction risk, households that prefer minimal-ingredient supplements, growing large-breed puppies whose connective tissue is under development stress, active or working adult dogs whose daily wear needs ongoing structural support, and seniors whose cartilage maintenance has become a priority. For dogs whose primary need is structural joint repair with the full suite of joint ingredients (eggshell membrane, curcumin, Poria), Hip & Joint is the more comprehensive choice. For dogs needing broad omega support (joints, skin, coat, immune together), Safe-Sea is the first-line product. Collagen can also be combined with either of these — they work on different mechanisms.

Third-Party Tested — Certificate of Analysis Per Batch

Every batch of Collagen is third-party tested for heavy metals, pesticides, and microbial contaminants, with a Certificate of Analysis available on request. Four Leaf Rover holds the NASC Quality Seal and is certified Plastic Negative by rePurpose Global. Manufacturing is GMP-compliant.

How to Use

Give once daily, mixed into food. Measure according to your dog's body weight using the guide below.

Body weight Daily amount
Up to 11 kg (1–25 lbs) ¼ tsp
12–23 kg (26–50 lbs) ½ tsp
24–45 kg (51–100 lbs) 1 tsp
45+ kg (100+ lbs) 1½ tsp

An 84.9g jar typically lasts anywhere from around one to several months depending on your dog's size. Safe for long-term daily use.

Caution.
Dogs with a confirmed beef allergy should not be given Collagen. For dogs with severe food sensitivities, introduce gradually — a small amount for the first 3–5 days — and watch for any reaction before moving to the full dose. Safe for pregnant, lactating, and senior dogs at the appropriate dose. If your dog's condition worsens or doesn't improve, consult your veterinarian.
Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Refrigeration is not required but will help maintain freshness over time. Keep the lid tightly sealed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Collagen compare to Safe-Sea, Hip & Joint, and Better Bones?

All four support joint or skeletal health but in different ways. Here is how they compare:

Can I give Collagen alongside Hip & Joint or Safe-Sea?

Yes. Collagen works on the connective tissue matrix specifically — Type I and Type II collagen building blocks. Hip & Joint adds eggshell membrane, curcumin, and Poria mushroom for a broader structural joint approach. Safe-Sea adds the omega fatty acids that support inflammatory balance. All three work on different mechanisms. For dogs with significant joint or connective tissue issues, combining Collagen with one or both of the others delivers more complete coverage than any single product alone.

Why is bovine collagen better for sensitive dogs than marine collagen?

Two reasons. First, single source: Four Leaf Rover's collagen comes from 100% grass-fed New Zealand beef — one ingredient, one source, fully traceable. Marine collagen is often blended from multiple fish species, which makes allergen identification harder if a reaction occurs. Second, cleanliness: bovine sources raised on pasture are generally lower in the heavy metals and environmental contaminants that can accumulate in marine species. For dogs with food sensitivities or owners who prioritise minimal-ingredient supplements, bovine collagen is the cleaner starting point.

How quickly will I see results?

Collagen works gradually — it's supporting tissue maintenance and repair at a structural level, which is a slow biological process. Allow 4–8 weeks of consistent daily dosing before assessing effect. Visible improvements in coat quality and activity-related mobility are often the first signs. Cartilage and connective tissue support builds over months rather than weeks. Long-term daily use is where Collagen delivers its most meaningful benefit.

Is Collagen suitable for puppies?

Yes — particularly for large and giant breed puppies, whose connective tissue is under development stress during the rapid growth phase. Starting Collagen early supports the structural integrity of tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone matrix during the years that matter most for long-term joint health. Use the appropriate weight-based dose.

My dog has a confirmed beef allergy. Are there alternatives?

For dogs with beef allergy, Collagen isn't suitable. Consider Hip & Joint instead — its active ingredients are GLM, eggshell membrane, Poria mushroom, and curcumin, none of which are beef-derived. Safe-Sea is another option if the goal is omega-based joint support — its ingredients are green-lipped mussel oil and Ahiflower, also not beef-derived.

Is the freeze-dried beef liver significant in dosage?

The beef liver is present in small amounts for palatability — it helps even picky dogs accept Collagen readily mixed into food. It's not a functional ingredient at this dose, just a natural flavour aid. For dogs with any beef sensitivity, this is part of why the full Collagen product isn't suitable.

Why is hydrolysed collagen better than whole collagen?

Hydrolysed collagen has been broken down into shorter peptide chains during processing, making it dramatically easier for the body to absorb. Whole collagen — from bone broth, for example — delivers some benefit but much of it is excreted before being used. The hydrolysed peptides in Four Leaf Rover's Collagen are designed for efficient absorption and delivery to the tissues that need them.
