Safe-Sea is Four Leaf Rover's sustainable, whole-food omega-3 oil for dogs — built around New Zealand green-lipped mussel oil (GLM) paired with Ahiflower seed oil and naturally occurring astaxanthin. Where most omega supplements for dogs are fish oil from over-harvested wild-caught species, Safe-Sea delivers a broader spectrum of fatty acids, better bioavailability, and cleaner sourcing — without the fishy aftertaste or sustainability concerns. Available in 113ml.

This is the omega oil to reach for when the goal is systemic support — joints, skin, coat, and immune function all respond to the right omegas, and GLM oil is one of the most complete marine sources available. The addition of Ahiflower (a plant oil uniquely rich in GLA and SDA) fills in the fatty acids that marine oils alone can't provide, making Safe-Sea functionally a more complete omega profile than any single-source oil.

Usage & safety notes.
Give once daily, mixed into food, according to body weight. Refrigeration is recommended after opening to maintain potency, though the naturally occurring astaxanthin gives Safe-Sea better shelf stability than most marine oils. Safe for long-term daily use in dogs of all life stages.
Why Green-Lipped Mussel Oil, Not Fish Oil

Most omega-3 supplements for dogs are fish oil — salmon, anchovy, sardine, or a mix. Fish oil works, but it has real limitations. It's primarily two fatty acids (EPA and DHA). It comes from species that are either wild-caught from increasingly depleted stocks, or farmed on soy and corn feed that skews the omega ratio. And because fish oil isn't protected by phospholipids, it oxidises easily — meaning the oil in the bottle may already be partially rancid by the time it reaches your dog.

Green-lipped mussel oil is different. GLM contains over 30 fatty acids — not just EPA and DHA, but also ETA (eicosatetraenoic acid), an omega-3 found in meaningful amounts almost nowhere else. ETA supports a balanced inflammatory response particularly relevant for joint and soft tissue health. The omegas in GLM are carried in phospholipids rather than triglycerides, which dramatically improves cellular absorption and protects the fats from oxidation. New Zealand-farmed GLM is also one of the most sustainable marine protein sources on the planet — mussels are grown on ropes, feed on phytoplankton, require no external food input, and produce zero by-catch.

Why Add Ahiflower

GLM oil is one of the best marine omega sources, but marine oils alone don't provide everything. They're missing GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), an omega-6 fatty acid that supports skin health and balanced inflammatory response, and SDA (stearidonic acid), a precursor that helps the body produce EPA efficiently. Ahiflower is a plant oil grown on regenerative farmland in the UK and PEI — and it's one of the richest plant sources of both GLA and SDA available. Adding Ahiflower to the GLM base turns Safe-Sea from a good marine oil into a more complete omega profile. You'd otherwise need to give your dog both a marine oil AND a plant oil (hemp, flax, or camelina) to cover the same fatty acid range.

Astaxanthin — The Natural Preservative

Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant naturally present in green-lipped mussels — it's what gives Safe-Sea its distinctive reddish colour. In the bottle, it protects the delicate omega fats from oxidation, extending shelf life without synthetic preservatives. In the body, it works as a cellular antioxidant, with research suggesting benefits for eye health, skin protection, and post-exercise recovery. A functional ingredient, not just a colourant.

What Safe-Sea Supports

Joint mobility and comfort. The ETA in GLM oil is one of the most researched omega-3s for joint support — a 2007 trial showed significant mobility improvements in dogs given GLM over 8 weeks. Combined with the EPA and DHA already present, Safe-Sea delivers a fatty acid profile designed for dogs with joint stiffness, ageing joints, or active working/athletic use.

Skin and coat health. The GLA in Ahiflower is one of the most directly skin-supportive fatty acids available. Dogs with dull coats, dandruff, dry skin, or seasonal allergies often respond visibly to a consistent GLA source.

Balanced inflammatory response. GLM and Ahiflower both modulate the inflammatory pathways that affect joints, skin, and immune function. Not a suppressant — a balancer.

Cellular and cognitive function. The DHA in GLM supports brain and nervous system health, particularly valuable for senior dogs and young puppies in development.

No Fishy Burps, No Aftertaste

One of the practical problems with fish oil is that it smells and tastes like fish, often intensely — and dogs often develop a noticeable fishy odour on their breath, skin, and coat. Safe-Sea has a mild ocean-fresh aroma that most dogs accept readily, no fishy burps, and no lingering smell. The freeze-drying process and astaxanthin preservation keep the oil fresh, which makes a meaningful difference for both palatability and daily compliance.

When to Reach for Safe-Sea

Safe-Sea is the Four Leaf Rover omega supplement for dogs needing broad systemic support: joints, skin, coat, and immune function together. It's the first-line omega oil for dogs of all life stages — puppies, adults, and seniors — and pairs well with targeted joint products for dogs with specific mobility concerns. For dogs whose primary need is structural joint support (cartilage repair, connective tissue, mobility), Hip & Joint adds eggshell membrane, curcumin, and Poria mushroom in a powder form alongside GLM. Both products can be given together — Safe-Sea delivers the omega fats, Hip & Joint delivers the structural cartilage support.

Third-Party Tested — Certificate of Analysis Per Batch

Every batch of Safe-Sea is third-party tested for heavy metals, PCBs, pesticides, and microbial contaminants, with a Certificate of Analysis available on request. Four Leaf Rover holds the NASC Quality Seal and is certified Plastic Negative by rePurpose Global. Manufacturing is GMP-compliant.

How to Use

Give once daily, mixed into food. Measure according to your dog's body weight using the guide below.

Body weight Daily amount
Up to 11 kg (1–25 lbs) ½ tsp
12–23 kg (26–50 lbs) ¾ tsp
23–34 kg (51–75 lbs) 1 tsp

45+ kg (100+ lbs) 2 tsp

A 113ml bottle typically lasts anywhere from around one to several months depending on your dog's size.

Caution.
Dogs with a confirmed shellfish allergy should not be given Safe-Sea — green-lipped mussels are a shellfish. Introduce gradually for dogs with sensitive digestion. Safe for pregnant, lactating, and senior dogs at the appropriate dose. If your dog's condition worsens or doesn't improve, discontinue and consult your veterinarian.
Storage

Refrigerate after opening to maintain freshness and potency. If fridge space is limited, store in a cool, dark place and use within 60 days of opening. Shake gently before use. Keep the cap tightly sealed.

Frequently Asked Questions

★ You are viewing Safe-Sea.

Can I give Safe-Sea alongside Hip & Joint?

Yes — they're designed to complement each other. Safe-Sea delivers the omega fats (GLM oil, Ahiflower, astaxanthin) that support a balanced inflammatory response and skin/coat health. Hip & Joint delivers the structural cartilage ingredients (eggshell membrane, curcumin, Poria mushroom, GLM powder) that support joint repair and mobility. For dogs with established joint issues — arthritis, stiffness, post-injury recovery — the combined approach covers both the inflammatory and structural sides of joint health.

Is green-lipped mussel oil really better than fish oil?

For dogs, yes — for several reasons. GLM oil contains over 30 fatty acids versus fish oil's two primary ones (EPA and DHA). It's uniquely rich in ETA, an omega-3 almost nowhere else in the food supply. The omegas are carried in phospholipids, which are significantly more bioavailable than the triglycerides in fish oil. And because mussels feed on phytoplankton from clean water, they're much lower in mercury, PCBs, and dioxins than farmed or wild-caught fish. The one caveat: GLM oil costs more per bottle than fish oil, because growing mussels sustainably is more expensive than fishing wild stocks.

Why does Safe-Sea use Ahiflower instead of flaxseed or hemp oil?

Ahiflower is significantly richer in GLA and SDA than flax or hemp — it contains roughly 60% more GLA than hemp oil, and meaningful levels of SDA that flax doesn't offer at all. SDA is particularly useful because it's a direct precursor to EPA, meaning the body can convert it efficiently into the omega-3 dogs need. Ahiflower is also grown on regenerative farmland in a way that supports pollinators and soil health — which fits Four Leaf Rover's broader sustainability ethos.

My dog won't touch fish oil — will Safe-Sea be different?

Most dogs accept Safe-Sea much more readily than fish oil. The GLM oil has a mild ocean-fresh aroma rather than the strong fishy smell of salmon or anchovy oil. There are no fishy burps and no lingering fish odour on breath or coat. If your dog has refused fish oil before, it's worth trying Safe-Sea — they're fundamentally different oils with different flavour profiles.

Is Safe-Sea safe for puppies and senior dogs?

Yes — safe and beneficial across all life stages at the appropriate weight-based dose. Puppies benefit from the DHA for brain and nervous system development. Senior dogs benefit from the joint and skin support. For very young puppies, start with a half-dose and build up over a week.

Why does the bottle look darker or lighter between batches?

Safe-Sea's colour comes from the naturally occurring astaxanthin in green-lipped mussels, and natural variation in astaxanthin content means the oil's colour can shift slightly between batches — from pale amber to deeper reddish-brown. This is normal and doesn't indicate any quality difference. The freshness of the oil is verified through third-party testing on every batch.
