Fluff & Tuff Play Guide
Fluff & Tuff makes premium plush dog toys — hand-designed in Michigan, ethically constructed, and built to a standard most plush toys never reach. This guide covers what makes them different, how to choose the right toy for your dog, how to care for them, and what to know about the squeaker-free Hush Fluffs range.
What makes Fluff & Tuff different
Fluff & Tuff is a woman-owned, family-operated company based in Michigan, established in 2010. They are a small team — under ten people, including the pups — and every toy is personally hand-designed by their team before being ethically constructed in ICTI-certified boutique facilities. The brand's three founding principles remain unchanged: durable yet attractive toys, exceptional customer service, and philanthropy wherever possible.
The toys are made with luxury fabrics that are incomparable to others on the market — a difference dogs feel and their owners see. Inside, a thick Tuffweb™ mesh liner gives each toy its structure and durability, while double-stitched concealed seams reinforce every join. The result is a plush toy that looks premium, feels premium, and holds up to real play far longer than standard pet store plush.
Since 2012, Fluff & Tuff has donated over 50,000 toys to dogs in need through shelter partnerships, their annual Holiday Charity Toy (100% of profits donated), and the #IGiveAFluff social media campaign — where every tagged post of a dog with a Fluff & Tuff toy triggers a toy donation to a shelter dog.
How they're built
Every Fluff & Tuff toy shares the same core construction — a set of material and structural decisions that together produce a toy significantly more durable and more attractive than standard plush.
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ultra-plush outer fabric | Luxury fabrics that feel noticeably different from standard plush — soft on the mouth, attractive on the shelf, and a tactile experience dogs respond to. |
| Tuffweb™ mesh liner | A thick, durable internal mesh layer sewn inside the outer fabric. This is the structural backbone of every toy — it holds the shape and resists tearing under play. |
| Double-stitched concealed seams | Every seam is stitched twice and hidden inside the toy. Seams are the first point of failure on most plush toys; this construction significantly extends play life. |
| Non-toxic polyester fill | Placed strategically for optimal shaping and playability — not just stuffed, but designed to give the toy the right feel in a dog's mouth. |
| Embroidered eyes | Sewn on, not glued or buttoned. No small parts that could detach and become a choking hazard. |
| Machine washable | Every toy can go in the washing machine on a gentle cycle. Air dry or tumble dry on low. |
Play styles
Dogs are unique. Different dogs play in different ways, and different toy shapes reward different play styles. Fluff & Tuff designs each toy around specific play modes — the shape, weight, and proportions are chosen to make that play style feel natural and satisfying.
Tug
For dogs who love to grip and pull — with a human or another dog. Look for toys with long, firm bodies or extended limbs. Monkeys, sloths, gators, caterpillars.
Shake
For dogs who grab and whip side to side. Pick toys with floppy legs, tails, or tentacles — the trailing motion amplifies the reward. Flamingos, octopuses, lobsters.
Fetch
Toys that are easy to throw and pick up. Look for firm shapes that are round or elongated. Balls, fish, ducks, sharks.
Toss
For lighter, quicker play. Best with toys a dog can easily hold and that are not too heavy for their size. Small plush, mini toys.
Snuggle
For dogs who carry their toy around, sleep with it, or bring it to the door. Look for rounder, firm bodies — like a pillow. Bears, koalas, bunnies.
Squeak attack
Most Fluff & Tuff toys include a squeaker. For dogs or owners who prefer quiet, the Hush Fluffs range offers squeaker-free alternatives.
Size guide
Fluff & Tuff toys range from extra-small (around 4" / 10 cm) to extra-large (up to 23" / 58.5 cm). Most dogs enjoy toys they can comfortably carry in their mouths. Use the guide below as a starting point — but the tail wag is the real test.
| Toy size | Approx. dimensions | Best for | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra Small | 4–9" / 10–23 cm | Toy breeds, puppies | Lady Bug, Anderson Fox, Baby Bruce Shark, Goldie Fish |
| Small | 7–12" / 18–30.5 cm | Small to medium breeds | Howie Duck, Jessica Bunny, Tank Shark, Jasper Fox |
| Medium | 8–12" / 20–30.5 cm | Most breeds | Marge Cow, Petey Pig, Harriet Hedgehog, Troy Beaver |
| Medium+ | 11–15" / 28–38 cm | Most breeds | Inca Alpaca, Marcel Monkey, Doc Koala, Sterling Fox |

Hush Fluffs — the squeaker-free range
Sometimes the best sound is no sound at all. Hush Fluffs deliver the same quality and construction as every other Fluff & Tuff toy — just without the squeaker. Same fabrics, same Tuffweb™ liner, same double-stitched seams.
Peace and quiet for owners. Ideal for households that value calm — during work calls, naps, or quiet evenings.
Calmer play for sensitive dogs. Some dogs find squeakers overstimulating. A quieter toy encourages relaxed, focused play instead of overexcitement or destructive squeaker hunts.
Safer for squeaker-seekers. For dogs who tend to tear toys apart specifically to find and swallow the squeaker, Hush Fluffs remove the risk entirely — no squeaker, no hazard.
Longer-lasting enjoyment. Dogs determined to "find the squeak" can destroy toys faster. Removing that temptation often means longer-lasting play.
Encourages variety in play. Without a squeak to chase, dogs engage more with the toy's shape, texture, and playability — shaking, tugging, and carrying rather than hunting for the sound.

How to pick the right toy
Three questions will get you to the right toy quickly.
How big is the dog? Most dogs prefer toys they can comfortably carry in their mouths. A toy breed needs an extra-small; a Labrador needs a large or extra-large. The size guide above is a good starting point.
How does the dog like to play? Match the play style to the toy shape. A dog who loves to shake needs floppy limbs and trailing parts. A dog who loves to tug needs long, firm bodies. A dog who carries their toy everywhere needs something round and snuggly.
How old is the dog? Puppies tend to love everything and chew everything — choose a size they can carry and always supervise. Older dogs may have less energy and be more inclined to snuggle. Neither is wrong — just match the toy to the dog's current energy.
Care & washing
All Fluff & Tuff toys are machine washable.
Washing. Machine wash on a gentle cycle with a mild, pet-safe detergent. Check the toy for any holes or tears before washing — loose fill can clog your machine.
Drying. Air dry fully before returning the toy to your dog. Tumble dry on low is also fine. Do not use high heat.
Between washes. A quick once-over after each play session goes a long way. Remove any loose threads, check seams for wear, and give the fabric a light brush or shake to keep it looking fresh.
Textured toys. A mesh wash bag is recommended for toys with shaggy or textured outer fabric (e.g. Shaggy the Highland Cow) to preserve the surface over time.
Safety & testing
The quality and safety of Fluff & Tuff toys is the brand's number one priority. Every toy meets or exceeds the following standards:
ASTM F963 compliance. All toys meet the same U.S. safety standard applied to children's plush toys — the most rigorous benchmark available for plush construction.
Non-toxic and AZO-dye free. Every toy is made from non-toxic materials and free from AZO dyes.
Tested for lead and phthalates. Independently tested to ensure compliance.
Double-scanned for foreign objects. Every production run is scanned twice for metal or foreign objects before leaving the factory.
Embroidered eyes. Sewn on — not glued, not buttoned. No detachable small parts.
ICTI-certified facilities. All toys are ethically manufactured in ICTI-certified boutique facilities — the international standard for responsible manufacturing in the toy industry.
Frequently asked questions
Are Fluff & Tuff toys indestructible?
No. They are durable — significantly more so than standard plush — but no plush toy is indestructible. They are designed for interactive play (tug, fetch, shake, snuggle), not aggressive chewing. Always supervise play and remove the toy if chewing begins.
Are they safe for puppies?
Yes — all Fluff & Tuff toys meet the ASTM F963 safety standard and feature embroidered eyes with no detachable small parts. Choose an extra-small or small size for puppies, and always supervise play with young dogs.
My dog had a Fluff & Tuff toy for years and never destroyed it, but the replacement was shredded in a week. Did the quality change?
No — Fluff & Tuff never changes their quality or durability standards. Dogs can be unpredictable. The new toy may have smelled different, or the dog may have been ready for a different type of play. If you believe there is a genuine manufacturing defect — a squeaker that does not work, a seam that was not properly sewn — contact us and we will work with the brand to make it right.
Why does my new toy look slightly different from the last one?
Fluff & Tuff toys are made in small boutique facilities with some features sewn by hand, which adds to their uniqueness. Variations in fabric dye lots and sewing direction can make toys look slightly darker or lighter between production runs — but it is always the same quality fabric.
Do Fluff & Tuff toys come with a guarantee?
No — Fluff & Tuff does not offer a manufacturer's guarantee or warranty, particularly against destructive chewing. However, if a toy has a genuine manufacturing defect, they will work to make it right.
Where are they made?
All toys are personally hand-designed by the Fluff & Tuff team in Michigan, USA, and ethically constructed in ICTI-certified boutique facilities.
What are the Hush Fluffs?
Hush Fluffs are squeaker-free versions of Fluff & Tuff toys — same quality, same construction, just without the squeaker. They are ideal for quiet homes, sensitive dogs who find squeakers overstimulating, or dogs who tend to tear toys apart to find and swallow the squeaker.
