Steve's Real Food Raw Freeze-Dried Chicken is a complete and balanced raw meal for dogs and cats — made in the USA from free-range chicken including meat, bone, liver and gizzard, combined with whole-food produce, raw goat's milk, New Zealand green-lipped mussels, kelp, salmon oil, and coconut oil. The full raw meal is formulated first, then freeze-dried whole to lock in raw nutrition in a shelf-stable, scoop-and-serve format. Formulated to the B.A.R.F. model (80% meat, organ and bone; 20% produce), meeting AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages — no synthetic vitamin pack, no grains, no fillers.

Always rehydrate before serving as a meal. Warm water, bone broth or raw goat's milk all work — feeding dry in more than treat-sized amounts can cause digestive discomfort.

WHY THE CHICKEN RECIPE

Chicken sits mid-range on fat and protein across the Steve's Real Food line-up, making it a sensible starting protein for dogs transitioning to raw for the first time, and a steady option for active dogs that don't need the richness of red meats. The recipe is high in manganese and magnesium — both drawn from the ground bone and organ fraction, and both relevant to ligament and connective tissue health. Chicken also carries a complete amino acid profile, which means the formulation doesn't need supplemental amino blends to hit nutritional completeness. Classified as a warming protein in the TCM energetic framework.

THE MISSING CATEGORY IN SHELF-STABLE DOG FOOD

Shelf-stable dog food in Singapore is almost entirely kibble, and even the better-marketed bags sit on the same foundation — cooked at high temperatures, bulked with starch, and rebuilt to completeness through a synthetic vitamin and mineral premix. The freeze-dried shelf has grown, but much of it is either a kibble-adjacent topper or a "raw-coated" kibble with freeze-dried meat sprayed onto an extruded core.

What's missing is a genuinely raw, complete diet that travels. Steve's Real Food is that format — a full raw meal formulated to BARF ratios, then preserved without heat and without synthetics. The nuggets are shelf-stable until opened, rehydrate to a porridge consistency in minutes, and deliver the nutritional profile of a frozen raw meal in a bag that fits in a travel kit.

INGREDIENTS

Source: Steve's Real Food. Free-range chicken sourced from a family-owned farm in the Pacific Northwest.

Ground Chicken, Chicken Bone, Chicken Liver, Chicken Gizzard — the 80% meat, organ and bone fraction. Free-range chicken raised without added hormones, antibiotics or pesticides. Ground bone delivers naturally occurring calcium; liver and gizzard provide concentrated vitamin A, B vitamins, iron, zinc, and copper.

Broccoli, Carrots, Romaine Lettuce, Cantaloupe — the 20% produce fraction. A spread of antioxidants, fibre and plant-derived micronutrients rather than bulk fillers.

Goat's Milk — raw goat's milk from a family farm in Gaston, Oregon. Delivers naturally occurring probiotics and digestive enzymes, and contributes to the porridge consistency on rehydration.

New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussels — a whole-food source of omega-3 fatty acids and naturally occurring glucosamine and chondroitin. Supports joint and skin health without synthetic isolates.

Kelp — the recipe's primary whole-food source of iodine and trace minerals. Replaces a significant portion of what a synthetic vitamin pack would otherwise provide.

Salmon Oil — an additional source of EPA and DHA omega-3s. The fats that sit behind a glossy coat and calmer skin.

Coconut Oil — medium-chain triglycerides for readily available energy, with mild antimicrobial properties.

Flaxseed, Inulin, Taurine, Ground Eggshell — supporting whole-food inclusions for fibre, prebiotic function, cardiac health and additional mineral support.

HOW TO FEED

Scoop, rehydrate, serve. Measure the daily amount into a clean bowl and add warm water at a ratio of ¾ cup water to every 1 cup of nuggets. Stir and let the liquid absorb for 5–10 minutes, until the food reaches a porridge consistency. Low-sodium bone broth or raw goat's milk can be used in place of water. Puppies and kittens under 6 months should be fed the daily amount split across two meals. When switching from kibble or another food, transition gradually over 1–2 weeks.

Body weight Daily amount (dry) Days per bag Cost per day
2–5 kg 30–55 g ~10–19 days ~$5.64
5–10 kg 55–95 g ~6–10 days ~$10.06
10–20 kg 95–170 g ~3–6 days ~$17.70
20–30 kg 170–240 g ~2–3 days ~$27.49
30 kg+ 240 g+ ~1–2 days from ~$32.17

Cost per day uses the mid-point of each feeding range at $76 per bag. Every dog metabolises food differently — adjust up or down based on activity level, age and body condition.

STORAGE

Keep the bag sealed, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Singapore humidity is the main thing to manage — store in a dry cupboard or pantry, not near a window or in a bathroom-adjacent space. Once opened, use within 4–6 weeks. Unopened shelf life is typically 24 months from manufacture; check the best-by date on the packaging. Handle the nuggets and rehydrated food with the same care as raw meat — wash hands, bowls, and surfaces after each meal. Refrigerate any uneaten rehydrated food and use within 24 hours.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How soon will I see a difference after switching?
Stool changes — smaller, firmer, less odour — are usually the first visible shift, within the first week. Coat and skin improvements typically appear over 4–8 weeks. Energy and appetite often shift within the first fortnight, particularly in dogs coming off kibble.

Is this a complete meal or a topper?
It is a complete and balanced diet, formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages. It can replace kibble entirely, or be used as a topper over an existing meal — the food is the same either way.

Does this replace routine vet care?
No. A nutrient-dense diet supports overall health, but it is not a substitute for regular check-ups, dental care or prescribed medication. If a dog has a diagnosed condition, discuss a raw diet with the treating vet before switching.

Is it suitable for senior dogs?
Yes. The rehydrated porridge texture is easy on teeth and slower eaters, and the higher moisture content supports kidney and urinary health — both useful for seniors.

Can I feed this to a puppy?
Yes — the recipe meets AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages, including growth. Puppies need proportionally more food per kilo of body weight than adults; split the daily amount across two meals and adjust based on growth rate.

What makes freeze-dried raw different from a raw-coated kibble?
A raw-coated kibble is extruded kibble with a light dusting of freeze-dried meat sprayed on the outside — the core is still cooked, starch-bulked, and built to completeness through a synthetic premix. Steve's Real Food is the reverse: a full raw meal formulated to BARF ratios, then freeze-dried whole. The nutrition sits in the food itself, not in a sprayed coating.

Is it safe? What about salmonella?
Every batch of Steve's Real Food raw chicken is tested for salmonella and other bacteria before shipping. The FDA enforces a zero-tolerance level for salmonella in raw pet food — stricter than the USDA standard applied to chicken sold in supermarkets. The facility is FDA-inspected, and cold-pressure processing is used prior to freeze-drying to reduce pathogen risk while preserving raw nutritional value.

Can I rotate this with the other Steve's Real Food proteins?
Yes, and rotation is encouraged. Steve's Real Food offers Turkey, Beef, Pork, Lamu (lamb + emu), Turducken and White Fish in the same freeze-dried format.
