Healthy Gut is a digestive enzyme, prebiotic, and probiotic supplement for dogs and cats — the Love Bugs probiotic base (30 Billion CFU, 14 strains) combined with four targeted digestive enzymes: Porcine Pancreatin 8X, Bromelain, Betaine HCl, and Papain. It supports the complete digestion and absorption of food, helps rebalance gut flora, and is particularly well suited to pets on dry or processed diets where natural food enzymes have been destroyed by heat during manufacturing.

Porcine Pancreatin 8X USP is a mixture of three digestive enzymes — protease (breaks down protein), lipase (breaks down fat), and amylase (breaks down carbohydrates) — produced by the exocrine cells of the porcine pancreas. The "8X" designation means it has eight times more enzyme activity than the standard USP reference, making it significantly more potent than generic pancreatin. It provides comprehensive macronutrient breakdown, improving the absorption of fat, protein, and energy from every meal. When taken away from food, it also exerts anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving actions in the body.

Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme mixture derived from the stem, fruit, and juice of the pineapple plant. When given with food, it aids in the proper digestion and absorption of protein. Given between meals, it is absorbed intact and circulates through the body where it exhibits anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving actions — beneficial for the cardiovascular, circulatory, and digestive systems. At 2400 GDU (Gelatin Digesting Units), this is a therapeutically meaningful dose of a highly effective enzyme.

Papain is a proteolytic enzyme derived from unripe papaya. It helps the body break down protein foods — particularly animal meat, which is the primary protein source in a carnivore's diet — and is commonly used to support gastrointestinal function and digestive health. Beyond digestion, papain may increase immune system function and promote the release of natural compounds that target abnormal cells. Papain is also anti-parasitic.

Betaine HCl is a supplemental form of hydrochloric acid. In the stomach, hydrochloric acid converts pepsinogen to pepsin, the enzyme that initiates protein digestion. Many animals — particularly seniors and those with chronic digestive issues — produce insufficient hydrochloric acid, leading to poor protein breakdown and reduced absorption of key nutrients including calcium, iron, and vitamin B12. Betaine HCl supplements stomach acid production, restoring conditions for proper protein digestion and nutrient uptake.

The enzyme blend is combined with the same 14-strain, 30 Billion CFU allergen-free probiotic base found in Adored Beast Apothecary's Love Bugs and Gut Soothe formulas, plus larch arabinogalactan (600mg) as a prebiotic. Together these repopulate the gut with beneficial bacteria, inhibit yeast growth by lowering intestinal pH, and block pathogen adhesion sites — providing broad-spectrum gut flora support alongside the targeted enzyme action.

All commercial pet food is processed at high temperatures that destroy the natural enzymes present in raw ingredients. This means pets on dry kibble or canned food receive almost no dietary enzymes — placing the entire burden of digestion on the animal's own enzyme production. Over time, this leads to digestive inefficiency, reduced nutrient absorption, and increased stool volume. Adding Healthy Gut to every meal compensates for this enzyme deficit, helping the body break down and absorb more of the nutrition in each meal. Reduced stool volume is a common sign that more food is being properly utilised.
