Healthy Gut is a digestive enzyme, prebiotic, and probiotic supplement for dogs and cats — the Love Bugs probiotic base (30 Billion CFU, 14 strains) combined with four targeted digestive enzymes: Porcine Pancreatin 8X, Bromelain, Betaine HCl, and Papain. It supports the complete digestion and absorption of food, helps rebalance gut flora, and is particularly well suited to pets on dry or processed diets where natural food enzymes have been destroyed by heat during manufacturing.
Developed by Adored Beast Apothecary founder Julie Anne Lee, DCH RCSHom, Healthy Gut is designed for dogs and cats who need help breaking down their food efficiently — whether due to age, chronic digestive issues, enzyme deficiency, or the inherently enzyme-poor nature of commercially processed pet food. Excellent for cats with hairball issues. Available in 41g and 83g.
Usage & safety notes.
Divide the daily recommended amount evenly across each meal — do not give as a single daily dose. Refrigerate after opening for optimal freshness. For use in dogs and cats. Not for human consumption. Keep out of reach of children and other animals.
Porcine Pancreatin 8X — Triple-Enzyme Powerhouse
Porcine Pancreatin 8X USP is a mixture of three digestive enzymes — protease (breaks down protein), lipase (breaks down fat), and amylase (breaks down carbohydrates) — produced by the exocrine cells of the porcine pancreas. The "8X" designation means it has eight times more enzyme activity than the standard USP reference, making it significantly more potent than generic pancreatin. It provides comprehensive macronutrient breakdown, improving the absorption of fat, protein, and energy from every meal. When taken away from food, it also exerts anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving actions in the body.
Bromelain 2400 GDU — Protein Digestion & Anti-Inflammatory
Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme mixture derived from the stem, fruit, and juice of the pineapple plant. When given with food, it aids in the proper digestion and absorption of protein. Given between meals, it is absorbed intact and circulates through the body where it exhibits anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving actions — beneficial for the cardiovascular, circulatory, and digestive systems. At 2400 GDU (Gelatin Digesting Units), this is a therapeutically meaningful dose of a highly effective enzyme.
Papain 50,000 PU — Protein Breakdown & Immune Support
Papain is a proteolytic enzyme derived from unripe papaya. It helps the body break down protein foods — particularly animal meat, which is the primary protein source in a carnivore's diet — and is commonly used to support gastrointestinal function and digestive health. Beyond digestion, papain may increase immune system function and promote the release of natural compounds that target abnormal cells. Papain is also anti-parasitic.
Betaine HCl — Stomach Acid Support for Protein Absorption
Betaine HCl is a supplemental form of hydrochloric acid. In the stomach, hydrochloric acid converts pepsinogen to pepsin, the enzyme that initiates protein digestion. Many animals — particularly seniors and those with chronic digestive issues — produce insufficient hydrochloric acid, leading to poor protein breakdown and reduced absorption of key nutrients including calcium, iron, and vitamin B12. Betaine HCl supplements stomach acid production, restoring conditions for proper protein digestion and nutrient uptake.
30 Billion CFU Probiotic Base — The Love Bugs Foundation
The enzyme blend is combined with the same 14-strain, 30 Billion CFU allergen-free probiotic base found in Adored Beast Apothecary's Love Bugs and Gut Soothe formulas, plus larch arabinogalactan (600mg) as a prebiotic. Together these repopulate the gut with beneficial bacteria, inhibit yeast growth by lowering intestinal pH, and block pathogen adhesion sites — providing broad-spectrum gut flora support alongside the targeted enzyme action.
Especially Valuable for Pets on Dry or Processed Food
All commercial pet food is processed at high temperatures that destroy the natural enzymes present in raw ingredients. This means pets on dry kibble or canned food receive almost no dietary enzymes — placing the entire burden of digestion on the animal's own enzyme production. Over time, this leads to digestive inefficiency, reduced nutrient absorption, and increased stool volume. Adding Healthy Gut to every meal compensates for this enzyme deficit, helping the body break down and absorb more of the nutrition in each meal. Reduced stool volume is a common sign that more food is being properly utilised.

Is Healthy Gut suitable for cats?
Yes — Healthy Gut works excellently for cats. It is particularly beneficial for cats prone to hairballs, as improved digestion and gut motility help reduce hairball formation. All cats use the same flat dose of 1/16 tsp daily, divided across meals.
Can I use Healthy Gut if I feed dry food?
Yes — and it is especially recommended. All commercial kibble and canned food is processed at high temperatures that destroy the natural enzymes present in raw ingredients. Pets on processed food receive almost no dietary enzymes, placing the full burden of digestion on their own enzyme production. Adding Healthy Gut to every meal compensates for this, helping break down food more completely. A reduction in stool volume is a common sign that more of the food is being properly absorbed.
Does Healthy Gut need to be used for life?
Not necessarily — it depends on your animal's needs. Healthy Gut is best used in rotation with Gut Soothe and Love Bugs for a comprehensive gut health plan. Some animals — particularly those with a compromised ability to produce their own digestive enzymes — do better when kept on Healthy Gut long-term. Improved energy and reduced arthritic discomfort in seniors can be signs that the enzymes are supporting better nutrient absorption. Let your animal's response guide the duration.
Why are there clumps in my Healthy Gut?
Clumping is normal and harmless — it happens when moisture builds up around the digestive enzymes. Simply break down the clumps and mix the powder well before measuring. Note that Adored Beast Apothecary deliberately includes a separate silicone moisture packet in the jar rather than mixing silica dioxide into the formula itself. Do not remove the silicone packet from the jar.
Does Healthy Gut need to be refrigerated?
Refrigeration after opening is recommended for optimal freshness, but is not strictly required. The product is freeze-dried. If not refrigerating, store in a cool, dry place away from heat, light, and moisture.
