WHY SNUFFLE TOYS
A dog's sense of smell is their primary way of understanding the world — and scent work is one of the most mentally tiring activities you can give them. Snuffle toys engage this natural foraging instinct by hiding treats in layers of fabric that your dog has to nose through, paw at, and investigate to find. The result is a calm, focused session that reduces anxiety, slows down eating, and provides genuine mental enrichment. Ten minutes of snuffling can tire a dog out as effectively as a much longer physical activity, making snuffle toys particularly useful for rainy days, post-surgery recovery, senior dogs, or high-energy dogs that need a mental outlet alongside their walks.
WHAT TREATS TO USE
Air-dried treats are the best choice for snuffle toys — they hold their shape inside fabric folds, release scent well to keep your dog engaged, and won't leave residue on the fabric. Freeze-dried treats also work but can be slightly crumbly. Avoid soft fills like peanut butter, cream cheese, or meat paste — these aren't designed for fabric toys and will make the toy difficult to clean. For snuffle toys that disassemble for cleaning, freeze-dried crumbs are less of a concern since you can shake or rinse the pieces easily.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What's the difference between a snuffle toy and a snuffle mat?
A snuffle mat is a flat mat with fabric strips that treats are scattered into — simple and effective, but one-dimensional. Snuffle toys are three-dimensional objects with pockets, folds, flaps, and layers that require more investigation to solve. They tend to hold a dog's attention longer and offer more variety in how the treats are hidden.
What's the difference between a snuffle toy and a puzzle toy?
Snuffle toys engage the nose — your dog uses scent to locate treats hidden in fabric. Puzzle toys engage the paws and brain — your dog solves mechanical challenges like slides, lids, and compartments to access the treat. Both are enrichment; they work different skills. Many owners rotate between the two. Shop Puzzle Toys →
My dog has never used a snuffle toy — where should I start?
Start easy. Place treats on top of or between the outer fabric folds where your dog can see and smell them quickly. As they get the hang of it, tuck treats deeper into pockets and inner layers. Every dog can enjoy snuffle toys regardless of age, size, or experience — beginners may just take a little longer to find everything.
How do I clean a snuffle toy?
Most fabric snuffle toys can be machine washed on a gentle cycle and air dried. Snuffle toys that disassemble — like the Lambwolf Collective MONTI — make cleaning even easier since you can separate the pieces, shake out crumbs, and wash individual components. Always air dry fully before the next use to prevent mildew, especially in Singapore's humidity.
Are snuffle toys safe to leave with my dog unsupervised?
We recommend supervising snuffle sessions, particularly at first. Most dogs use snuffle toys as intended — nosing and pawing — but some may try to chew or tear the fabric to get treats out faster. Once you know your dog interacts gently, short unsupervised sessions are generally fine. Remove the toy once all treats have been found.
Where can I see snuffle toys in person?
Everything in this collection is available at our Wheelock Place store — 501 Orchard Road, #01-K3, Singapore. Open daily, 11am–7pm. Our team can demo any snuffle toy and help you choose based on your dog's experience level.
