The Grateful Pet Feeding Guide

Everything you need to know about feeding, storing, and transitioning to The Grateful Pet's gently cooked and raw meals for dogs and cats.

Gently cooked vs raw

Both formats are complete, balanced, and made from the same quality ingredients. The choice comes down to your preference and your pet's needs.

Gently Cooked Raw
Preparation Cooked at 80°C, lower than conventional methods Uncooked, flash-frozen
Nutrient profile Retains more nutrients than conventional cooking; pathogens eliminated by heat Maximum bioavailability of heat-sensitive vitamins and enzymes
Ideal for Dogs transitioning from processed food; owners who prefer a cooked format Dogs and cats on a species-appropriate raw diet; owners comfortable with raw handling
Available for Dogs (7 proteins) Dogs (6 proteins) and cats (4 proteins)
Packaging 8 trays of 2 x 125g packs (2 kg) Dogs: 8 trays of 2 x 125g packs (2 kg). Cats: 7 trays of 2 x 85g packs (1.19 kg)

Fresh food contains natural sources of fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that are more bioavailable than the synthetic alternatives found in ultra-processed diets. Your pet's body can absorb and use more nutrition from every bite. Because species-appropriate fresh diets are more digestible, your pet gets more usable energy and stays fuller for longer, supporting a healthier body weight.

Not sure which to start with? Gently cooked is often the easier first step for dogs transitioning from processed food. Once your dog is comfortable with fresh food, you can introduce raw meals alongside or as a full switch. Many owners rotate between both formats. Even adding a small amount of fresh food to an existing diet can make a meaningful difference.

Feeding dogs

Feed approximately 3 to 5% of your dog's ideal body weight per day, split across two meals.

Life stage Daily amount (% of body weight) Notes
Adult (maintenance) 3 to 5% Split across 2 meals
Puppy (5 months+) 6 to 8% 3 to 4 smaller meals for those under 6 months
Senior Approximately 3% Adjust based on appetite and metabolism
Active / working 5 to 6%+ Increase based on workload

Example: A 10 kg adult dog at 3 to 5% would eat 300 to 500g per day, split into two meals. That is roughly 2.5 to 4 packs of gently cooked or raw food per day.

Protein rotation. Rotating between different protein sources helps provide a broader spectrum of nutrients over time and can reduce the risk of developing food sensitivities or intolerances related to a single protein. The Grateful Pet offers 7 gently cooked and 6 raw proteins for dogs, making it easy to build variety into your dog's diet.

Body condition is your best guide. You should be able to feel your dog's ribs easily without pressing hard, and see a defined waist when viewed from above. Reassess portions every few weeks, especially during the transition period.

Feeding cats

Life stage Daily amount
Adult (5 kg) 1 tray (2 x 85g packs) twice a day
Kitten (5 months+), pregnant, or nursing Double the adult amount, split into 2 to 4 meals daily
Senior Adjust based on appetite and activity
No free-feeding. We do not recommend leaving food out for more than an hour, as it can lead to bacterial growth. Stick to regular mealtimes, which is especially important for kittens and nursing cats.

Protein rotation for cats. The Grateful Pet offers 4 raw cat proteins: Chicken, Beef & Chicken, Duck & Beef, and Kangaroo & Chicken. Rotating between them provides broader nutrient coverage and helps reduce the risk of developing intolerances. The Duck & Beef recipe is chicken-free, making it a good option for cats with chicken sensitivities.

Transitioning to fresh food

Whether your dog or cat is coming from processed food, home-cooked, or another fresh brand, a gradual transition helps the digestive system adjust.

Day New food Previous food
Day 1 to 2 20 to 30% 70 to 80%
Day 3 to 4 50% 50%
Day 5 to 6 70 to 80% 20 to 30%
Day 7+ 100%

Loose stools or mild digestive changes may occur depending on how quickly the transition is made, but this should not last longer than 2 days. A longer, more gradual transition (10 to 14 days) is recommended for pets with sensitive stomachs. After this initial period, you may start to notice positive changes in the smell, shape, and volume of your pet's stools.

For extremely picky pets during the transition period, light steaming is acceptable to enhance aroma and encourage eating.

What to expect. Fresh food is more digestible with less filler, so stool volume typically decreases and stools become firmer. Many owners report visible improvements in coat condition, energy levels, skin health, and overall vitality within the first few weeks.

Bone broth

The Grateful Pet's bone broth range is slow-simmered to extract naturally occurring collagen, chondroitin, and MSM. Each flavour uses just three ingredients: bones, organic apple cider vinegar, and one functional botanical or mushroom. Suitable for both dogs and cats.

Use as a hydrating meal topper, a recovery aid for unwell pets, a base for mixing with fresh food, or an appetite encourager for picky eaters. Particularly useful in Singapore's heat to support hydration.

Frequently asked questions

Is raw food suitable for all dogs and cats?

Raw food is suitable for healthy dogs and cats aged 5 months and above. It is not recommended for puppies or kittens under 5 months, pets with cancer, or those on chemotherapy or immunosuppressant medication.

My dog has food allergies. Which protein should I choose?

Avoid the known allergen. Wild Kangaroo is the most novel protein in the range and very rarely associated with sensitivities. Salmon & Sardine is a good option for dogs with sensitivities to land-based proteins. For cats with chicken allergies, Duck & Beef is chicken-free.

Can I repack the food into smaller portions?

Yes. Thaw in the fridge for about 6 hours until slightly softened, portion into zip-lock bags or airtight containers, and refreeze. This method only applies to meals that have been gradually thawed in the fridge.

What if there's an issue with my delivery?

Frozen meals cannot be returned once delivered, due to food safety. If anything arrives damaged, thawed, or incorrect, contact us as soon as possible with clear photos and we will resolve it for you.

How are the meals delivered?

Yes. All The Grateful Pet meals are delivered frozen within Singapore. Complimentary frozen delivery applies to dog food orders of 2 or more boxes, cat food orders of 3 or more boxes, and bone broth orders of 8 or more pouches. A $20 frozen delivery fee applies to orders below these minimums. You can select your preferred delivery day and time slot at checkout.
